Eskom has launched a Virtual Wheeling Platform
Eskom has launched its Virtual Wheeling Platform to facilitate electricity trading between independent power producers (IPPs) and their customers. The platform serves as an online marketplace that facilitates the buying and selling of electricity between IPPs and consumers.
What is virtual wheeling?
Virtual wheeling allows IPPs to sell and deliver electricity to end-users through an existing network. This system enables customers to obtain renewable energy without needing direct connections to generators.
How does it work?
- Virtual wheeling allows retrospective energy claims across all networks, regardless of distributor boundaries, following the Virtual Wheeling Business Rules.
- End users or off-takers who have agreements for wheeled energy must continue to settle their utility accounts with Eskom or the municipality.
- Eskom will refund energy claims for this product at WEPS, Local, and Non-Local rates, based on the 2024/2025 Eskom Tariff and Charges Booklet.
- You will need to submit a monthly claim to Eskom for wheeled energy to receive your refund.
